Fact Sheet 4: What unions are doing to win
- Union members are mobilised to fight for the law changes they need
- Union members and other workers are telling their own stories about what has happened to them and why the law needs to change
- They are telling their stories to MPs, co-workers, journalists, community groups, talkback radio audiences and readers of the newspaper letters pages
- They are sending thousands of postcards to the Minister of Labour Paul Swain, telling him that they support the Bill in general, but want changes to make it stronger
- They are emailing Mr Swain and other MPs to win their support
- They are organising meetings and inviting MPs and civic leaders to hear workers tell their stories about why the law needs to change
- They are fighting back when business lobby groups spread misinformation about the law changes and use scare tactics to oppose it
- They are making sure their non-union colleagues understand the issues and encouraging them to join the campaign
- They are building relationships with community groups which also have a concern for the well-being of workers and their families
- Within their unions they are organising support and solidarity
- Members are also organising support within industry sector groups
- Unions are working together and pooling their resources to support the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill and get the changes they want
- Union members are defending the Bill against rat-bag employers who can't stand it that workers might be able to get a fair deal.
