Fact Sheet 4: What unions are doing to win

  • Union members are mobilised to fight for the law changes they need
  • Union members and other workers are telling their own stories about what has happened to them and why the law needs to change
  • They are telling their stories to MPs, co-workers, journalists, community groups, talkback radio audiences and readers of the newspaper letters pages
  • They are sending thousands of postcards to the Minister of Labour Paul Swain, telling him that they support the Bill in general, but want changes to make it stronger
  • They are emailing Mr Swain and other MPs to win their support
  • They are organising meetings and inviting MPs and civic leaders to hear workers tell their stories about why the law needs to change
  • They are fighting back when business lobby groups spread misinformation about the law changes and use scare tactics to oppose it
  • They are making sure their non-union colleagues understand the issues and encouraging them to join the campaign
  • They are building relationships with community groups which also have a concern for the well-being of workers and their families
  • Within their unions they are organising support and solidarity
  • Members are also organising support within industry sector groups
  • Unions are working together and pooling their resources to support the Employment Relations Law Reform Bill and get the changes they want
  • Union members are defending the Bill against rat-bag employers who can't stand it that workers might be able to get a fair deal.
